“Did you deliver my offer to the Red Riot?”

His voice was smooth over the phone, but beneath its surface was a beast that demanded wary respect. I hadn’t been contracted out to Frank long—just long enough to realize he was already walking a razor’s edge when it came to retribution from the Red Riot—but even he was scared to death to get phone calls from Andrea. If the boss didn’t think it could be sent in a text, whoever picked up the phone was in deep shit. I had barely made it back to the condo on loan from him before the burner in my pocket began vibrating.

Andrea must have someone watching me, since he always picked opportune times to ask about my progress. The disastrous meeting was just this afternoon. One that made me question my commitment to this pitfall of a scheme Andrea tossed me into. It wasn't just my life on the line if I failed, though.

“I did,” I began, trying to keep my temper restrained. Internally, I could feel my fox bristle his fur in defense. The urge to shift and run off some of this restless frustration had me gritting my teeth. “Lore was… less than amicable. And she made it very clear she didn’t want another offer like it. Frank was under scrutiny for trying to fuck her over by kidnapping sex workers. She said some of them ended up in the last auction she hacked.” I paused, dreading the answer to the question burning in my throat. “Did you know he was sending women under protection of the Riot to your auctions?”

I couldn’t sleep last night, still immensely pissed off over my so-called ‘meeting’ with the Red Riot boss. Finding out Lore was a woman was shocking enough. Realizing she was somehow connected to that camgirl, Vixen, just made my job even more complicated, considering she decided she wanted nothing to do with me.

Frustration at my uselessness in this situation burned my ass.

"I left Frank to his own devices." Andrea's casual tone set my teeth on edge. The least he could do was sound a little more concerned about having a mob boss at his throat. Or rather, at my throat. "As long as he kept his profits high and his head down, I didn't care much about his methods of delivering product to the auctions."

"Well, he didn't do a very good job of that, did he?" As soon as I spoke the words I wanted to throttle myself. At this point, I just hoped for a swift death. Both my temper and will to live were sliding down a slippery slope. "Respectfully," I attempted to recover. "Frank didn't seem to want to operate at the standard you had set for him. I had walked blindly into the situation not knowing he was on bad terms with the Riot. It's a shame I couldn't prevent the consequences of his poor choices, is all." Simpering for Frank's benefit made me want to gag, like I'd attempted to swallow a heaping spoonful of cinnamon.
